Foshan: The Default Day Trip

Foshan sits 30 minutes south-west of Guangzhou by Metro Line 1 (extended as GMS Line into Foshan) or 20 minutes by high-speed rail from Guangzhou South to Foshan. It is a smaller and older city that served as the craft and manufacturing hinterland for Guangzhou for several centuries. The headline sights cluster in a walkable central area and fill a comfortable full day.
Zumiao Temple is the Ming dynasty Taoist complex dedicated to the Northern Emperor, built from 1078 and restored repeatedly over the centuries. Entry 20 CNY, open 8.30am to 6pm. The complex includes the temple halls, a traditional Lingnan garden and the Huang Feihong Memorial Hall dedicated to the 19th century martial artist. Allow 2 hours. The Ip Man Memorial Hall dedicated to the Wing Chun master (and Bruce Lee’s teacher) sits 5 minutes walk from Zumiao, free entry.
Liangyuan is a classical Lingnan garden from the Qing dynasty, entry 10 CNY, open 8.30am to 5pm. The Nanfeng Kiln complex in the southern suburbs covers Foshan’s long history as a ceramics centre, with the world’s oldest continuously operating dragon kiln (in operation since 1506). Full day budget: 60 to 100 CNY metro return plus 80 to 150 CNY in attraction entry and lunch at a local Cantonese restaurant. See the restaurants guide for food context.
Shenzhen and Hong Kong
Shenzhen connects via Guangzhou-Shenzhen high-speed rail from Guangzhou South to Shenzhen North in 29 to 40 minutes at 75 to 120 CNY second class. Trains run every 10 to 20 minutes from early morning to 11pm. Futian Station is the other Shenzhen arrival option and is closer to the Luohu Hong Kong border crossing. Highlights include Window of the World and Splendid China theme parks, OCT Bay, the Dafen art village, and the Lianhua Hill Park with the Deng Xiaoping statue.
Hong Kong via the high-speed rail from Guangzhou South to West Kowloon takes 47 to 53 minutes at 215 to 260 CNY each way. Foreign passport holders with visa-free Hong Kong access (which covers most Western nationalities for 7 to 90 days) can do this as a day trip. Allow 45 minutes each way for immigration. You clear Mainland Chinese exit at Guangzhou South and Hong Kong entry at West Kowloon, both under one roof at each end.
A practical Hong Kong day trip plan: 7am train from Guangzhou South, 8.20am arrival West Kowloon, breakfast in Tsim Sha Tsui, Star Ferry to Central, walk the Mid-Levels Escalator up to Soho for lunch, Peak Tram to Victoria Peak in the afternoon, dinner in Causeway Bay, 10pm train back to Guangzhou South. Budget 800 to 1,200 CNY total including train, metro and a proper dinner. The safety guide covers cross-border paperwork.
Chimelong: Best for Families

Chimelong Tourist Resort in Panyu District is the strongest family day trip from Guangzhou, reached via Metro Line 3 and Line 7 in about 60 minutes from central Tianhe. The resort covers three major attractions. Chimelong Safari Park holds giraffes, tigers, pandas and a 1.5 kilometre train-car safari loop. Tickets 250 to 320 CNY adults, 180 to 250 CNY children, open 9.30am to 6pm.
Chimelong Ocean Kingdom is the larger sister park on Hengqin Island near Zhuhai and runs as a separate day trip. In Panyu itself, Chimelong Water Park (summer only, May to October, 180 to 280 CNY) and Chimelong Paradise amusement park (200 to 300 CNY, open year-round) round out the complex. All three sit on the same Metro stop at Hanxi Changlong on Line 3.
Tickets are cheaper through the Chimelong WeChat mini-program than at the gate (10 to 20 percent discount on advance bookings). Go Monday to Thursday for shorter queues. Weekends at Safari Park see 3 to 5 hour wait times for the panda enclosure. The resort has attached hotels (Chimelong Panda Hotel, Chimelong Hotel) at 700 to 1,800 CNY if you want to split two parks across an overnight.
Kaiping Diaolou and the Pearl River Delta
Kaiping Diaolou are UNESCO-listed fortified watchtowers built by returning overseas Chinese in the early 20th century. Around 1,800 towers survive across Kaiping County, mixing Chinese traditional forms with European, Byzantine and Art Deco architectural borrowings. Zili Village and Jinjiangli Village have the strongest clusters. Combined entry tickets 180 CNY. Reach by high-speed rail from Guangzhou South to Kaiping South (90 minutes) then a local taxi or tour van for 50 to 100 CNY.
Private car hire from Guangzhou to Kaiping runs 800 to 1,200 CNY for a full day with a driver, suitable for groups of 3 to 4 and easier than the train-plus-taxi combination. Guides with English run 1,200 to 2,000 CNY per day through hotel concierges. Full day plan: leave Guangzhou 8am, tour Zili Village 10am to 12pm, lunch in Kaiping town, Jinjiangli Village 2pm to 4pm, back in Guangzhou by 7pm. The UNESCO listing for Kaiping Diaolou gives useful architectural context.
Danxia Mountain in Shaoguan is another UNESCO site but too far for a comfortable day trip at 3 hours each way. Zhuhai and Macau are reachable via Guangzhou-Zhuhai high-speed rail (75 minutes) then local transport, or direct coach. Macau entry for most foreign passports is visa-free for 30 to 90 days. Budget 500 to 800 CNY for a Macau day trip including transport, one casino visit and lunch.
When to Go and How to Plan
October to April is the strongest day trip window thanks to cooler weather and lower rainfall. Foshan, Kaiping and Chimelong all involve substantial outdoor time that is unpleasant in summer humidity. Shenzhen and Hong Kong are comfortable year-round because both cities have continuous air-conditioned malls and transit. Typhoon tails in August and September can disrupt the Nansha-Macau ferry and occasionally high-speed rail service.
Booking approach: High-speed rail through the 12306 app opens 15 days ahead of departure. Foreign passport holders now have direct booking access via passport verification. Trip.com and Ctrip.com (the same company) handle the same bookings with English interfaces and a small convenience fee. For Chimelong, book through the WeChat mini-program 3 to 7 days ahead for discounted tickets. Kaiping tours book 1 to 2 weeks ahead during peak season.
Packing for day trips: passport for Hong Kong and Macau, printed or phone copies of train tickets, water bottle (high-speed rail cars sell water at 10 CNY vs 3 CNY at station), light jacket for air-conditioned transit (even in summer), power bank, and local cash plus Alipay. For what to pair day trips with on return, see the things to do guide.

What is the most popular day trip from Guangzhou?
Foshan is the default choice, sitting 30 minutes southwest of Guangzhou on Metro Line 1 or via direct high-speed rail at 20 minutes. The Zumiao Temple, Liangyuan classical garden, Ceramics Museum and the Ip Man Memorial Hall make a full day. Budget 60 to 100 CNY for metro return plus 50 to 120 CNY for entry fees.
How do I get to Shenzhen?
Guangzhou-Shenzhen high-speed rail runs every 10 to 20 minutes from Guangzhou South to Shenzhen North, taking 29 to 40 minutes at 75 to 120 CNY second class. The older Guangzhou East to Shenzhen Luohu line is slower at 75 minutes but drops you right at the Hong Kong border crossing if that is your plan.
Is Chimelong Tourist Resort worth a day?
Chimelong in Panyu is one of the strongest family day trips in southern China, covering Safari Park, Ocean Kingdom and a water park across different ticket options. Safari Park runs 250 to 320 CNY, Ocean Kingdom 380 to 550 CNY. Reach it via Metro Line 3 and Line 7 in about 60 minutes from central Guangzhou.
Can I visit Hong Kong as a day trip?
Yes, the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong high-speed rail from Guangzhou South to West Kowloon takes 47 to 53 minutes at 215 to 260 CNY each way. Foreign visitors need a valid Hong Kong entry permit (visa-free for most Western passports for 7 to 90 days). Budget 600 to 900 CNY for the full round trip including immigration queues.
What is there to see in Kaiping?
Kaiping Diaolou are UNESCO-listed fortified watchtowers built by returning overseas Chinese in the early 20th century, about 2 hours southwest of Guangzhou by bus or private car. Zili and Jinjiangli villages have the strongest clusters of towers with combined entry tickets at 180 CNY. Private car hire runs 800 to 1,200 CNY for a full day round trip.
When is the best time for day trips?
October to December and February to April are the strongest windows with mild dry weather for outdoor attractions like Foshan gardens, Kaiping diaolou and Pearl River delta boat trips. Avoid July and August when heat and humidity make outdoor sites punishing. Typhoon tails in August and September can disrupt boat routes to Macau and Hong Kong.
Do I need a guide for day trips?
No for Foshan, Shenzhen and Chimelong, all of which have clear metro or high-speed rail links and English signage at major sights. A guide helps for Kaiping Diaolou and Danxia Mountain where rural roads and Mandarin-only signage make independent travel harder. Private guides run 800 to 1,500 CNY a day through hotel concierges.
How much does a day trip cost?
Foshan by metro runs 150 to 300 CNY per person all in. Shenzhen by high-speed rail costs 250 to 450 CNY with a couple of paid attractions. Chimelong hits 400 to 700 CNY including entry and transport. Kaiping with a private car sits 500 to 800 CNY per person for a group of three. Hong Kong day trips total 900 to 1,400 CNY.
