TLDR

October to early December is the sweet spot, with dry skies, daytime highs of 22 to 28 Celsius, nights 15 to 20, and low humidity. February to April gives mild weather with some rain. Avoid April and October Canton Fair weeks when hotel rates double. May to September is hot, humid and wet. Chinese New Year in late January to February slows the city but drops hotel prices.

Insider Tip

The 10-day window around mid-November is the best single period to visit. You get the Guangzhou International Light Festival at Canton Tower, dry clear weather at 22 to 26 Celsius, and lower hotel rates than late October Canton Fair or December Christmas. Book 2 to 3 months ahead for festival weekends.

Guangzhou’s Climate in Short

Best Time to Visit Guangzhou: Month by Month Guide

Guangzhou sits at 23 degrees north latitude, on the Tropic of Cancer, which puts it in the humid subtropical climate zone. Summers are long, hot and wet. Winters are short, mild and mostly dry with occasional cold snaps. Spring and autumn are the transitional seasons with the most comfortable weather for sightseeing. Monthly averages from the China Meteorological Administration:

January 13 to 18 Celsius, 40mm rain. February 14 to 18 Celsius, 65mm rain. March 17 to 21 Celsius, 85mm rain. April 22 to 26 Celsius, 170mm rain. May 25 to 30 Celsius, 280mm rain. June 27 to 32 Celsius, 275mm rain. July 28 to 34 Celsius, 230mm rain. August 28 to 33 Celsius, 225mm rain. September 26 to 32 Celsius, 180mm rain. October 23 to 29 Celsius, 80mm rain. November 18 to 24 Celsius, 40mm rain. December 14 to 19 Celsius, 25mm rain.

Humidity stays above 70 percent for most of the year and climbs above 85 percent during the June to August monsoon. Typhoons occasionally brush the Pearl River delta from late July through September, though direct hits on Guangzhou city are rare. Air quality is generally AQI 60 to 120, better than northern Chinese cities, with occasional spikes during winter cold snaps. The safety guide covers air quality management and typhoon awareness in more detail.

The Peak Window: October to December

Late October through December is the strongest overall window. Temperatures sit 18 to 26 Celsius during the day and 14 to 20 at night. Rain drops to 25 to 80mm monthly (compared with 250+ in summer). Humidity drops to 60 to 70 percent. Sky clarity is at its best, making Canton Tower and Pearl River night views sharp. Most major attractions have full opening hours and events.

November hosts the Guangzhou International Light Festival, which turns Canton Tower and the Zhujiang New Town CBD into a city-scale light installation for two weeks. The festival is free to walk around. Hotel rates in Tianhe and Zhujiang New Town rise 30 to 50 percent during peak festival weekends. Book 2 to 3 months ahead for best rooms.

December stays dry and mild into the new year. Christmas is not a public holiday in China but Western shopping malls in Tianhe (Taikoo Hui, Grandview) run full Christmas decoration displays. Temperatures drop to 13 to 19 Celsius by late December, with occasional sub-10 Celsius nights. Pack a light jumper for evenings. This is the second best window for outdoor sightseeing after November.

Winter and Early Spring: January to March

Best Time to Visit Guangzhou: Month by Month Guide
Best Time to Visit Guangzhou: Month by Month Guide

January is cool and dry, 13 to 18 Celsius by day and 8 to 12 at night. Cold snaps can drop daytime highs to 6 to 10 Celsius for a few days at a time, feeling sharper than the numbers suggest because most older Chinese buildings lack central heating. Chinese New Year (Spring Festival) falls in late January or early to mid-February depending on the lunar calendar, and empties much of the city as locals travel home.

Chinese New Year impact: Many small restaurants close for 3 to 7 days around the actual holiday. Hotels drop rates 15 to 30 percent below regular winter pricing as domestic business travel stops. Temples like Guangxiao, Liurong and Five Immortals see huge crowds on the first three days with incense and prayers for the new year. Flower markets in Liwan and Yuexiu run in the 7 days before the holiday and are visually striking even if you skip the shopping.

February and March see temperatures climb 17 to 21 Celsius by day with rain starting to build. March has 85mm average rainfall, most of it in short afternoon showers. Flower displays at Yuexiu Park and Luhu Park are at their peak. If you visit February to March, pack layers and an umbrella. Hotel rates stay low through February (after Chinese New Year) and start climbing in March as shoulder season kicks in.

Canton Fair Weeks: April and October

The Canton Fair (China Import and Export Fair) is the largest trade fair in China, held in three phases at the Canton Fair Complex in Pazhou each April (mid-April to first week of May) and each October (mid-October to first week of November). Total attendees across the three phases run 150,000+. Hotel rates across all central districts double or triple. Flights from Hong Kong and major Chinese cities fill. Airport taxi queues stretch. Restaurant bookings in Pazhou, Tianhe and Zhujiang New Town need 3 to 7 days advance.

If you are visiting for the fair itself, book hotels 3 to 6 months ahead and consider Pazhou or Haizhu bases to walk to the exhibition halls. If you are a tourist, avoid these dates entirely. The weather in mid-April to early May is actually good (22 to 27 Celsius, manageable rain) but you are paying double for accommodation and sharing the city with an extra 50,000 trade visitors on any given day.

Exact fair dates are published a year ahead on the Canton Fair official website. Plan around phases 1, 2 and 3 rather than just the fair name. Phase gaps of 4 to 6 days offer a short window of lower rates mid-fair for non-attendees who accept some overlap.

Summer: Hot, Wet and Cheap

May to September is the low season for leisure visitors because of heat, humidity and rain. Daytime highs run 28 to 34 Celsius with humidity above 80 percent. Afternoon thunderstorms hit most days in June, July and August, typically 45 to 90 minutes of heavy rain that clears quickly. Typhoon tails occasionally disrupt flights and ferry routes to Hong Kong and Macau from late July through September.

Hotel rates drop 25 to 40 percent below peak winter rates in late May, June and early September (avoiding the late-August high season for domestic Chinese tourists). Mid-range 4 star hotels in Tianhe run 500 to 800 CNY (compared with 900 to 1,500 CNY in November). Budget options drop proportionally. Restaurant wait times are minimal. Attraction queues at Canton Tower and Chen Clan Academy are short.

Survival tips for summer visits: Start sightseeing at 7am and finish outdoor exposure by 10am. Take a midday break in air-conditioned malls or at a dim sum hall from 11.30am to 3pm. Resume outdoor activity from 4pm or later. Canton Tower at sunset is particularly good in summer because clear post-storm evenings give unusually sharp views. Carry a compact umbrella, strong sunscreen and extra water. See the walking tours guide for heat-adapted route timing.

When is the best time to visit Guangzhou?

October to early December is the sweet spot, with dry skies, daytime temperatures of 22 to 28 Celsius, nights around 15 to 20, and low humidity. February to April gives you mild weather and flower displays, though with some rain. Summer from June to September is hot (33 to 38 Celsius) and humid with afternoon thunderstorms.

What is winter like in Guangzhou?

Winter runs December to February with daytime highs of 15 to 20 Celsius and nights dropping to 8 to 12. It rarely freezes and snow is essentially unknown, but cold snaps can feel sharp because most older buildings lack central heating. Pack layers, a light jacket and a thin jumper for evenings.

When is the rainy season?

The main rains run April to June and again August to September, with May and June being the wettest months. Expect heavy afternoon showers that clear in an hour rather than all day rain. July and August combine heat, humidity and thunderstorms, with typhoon tails occasionally affecting the Pearl River delta.

Is it too hot to visit in summer?

July and August are the hottest and most humid months, with highs of 33 to 38 Celsius and humidity often above 85 percent. Sightseeing at Canton Tower, Yuexiu Park and Shamian Island needs early starts before 10am and late afternoon walks after 5pm. Midday is for air-conditioned malls, museums and dim sum halls.

Does Guangzhou get crowded during Chinese New Year?

Chinese New Year (late January or February) empties much of the city as locals travel home, while pushing hotel rates down slightly. Many small restaurants close for 3 to 7 days around the actual holiday. Temples like Guangxiao and Liurong see huge crowds on the first three days. Book trains weeks in advance.

What should I pack?

Year round: lightweight breathable cotton or linen, comfortable walking shoes, a compact umbrella. October to March: add a light jacket and a jumper for evenings. April to September: add moisture-wicking shirts, extra socks and a sun hat. Bring modest cover for temple visits and always pack a universal adapter for type A, C and I sockets.

Is Canton Fair season worth timing around?

Canton Fair runs in April and October at the Canton Fair Complex in Pazhou, doubling or tripling hotel rates across central districts for about five weeks total. If you are not attending the fair, visit outside these windows for 30 to 60 percent cheaper accommodation. If you are, book rooms three to six months ahead.

What month has the best deals?

Late May to early July and late August to mid-September usually have the lowest hotel rates, with rooms 25 to 40 percent below autumn pricing. You trade off some afternoon heat and rain, but mornings and early evenings stay workable. February after Chinese New Year also drops to low season rates for about three weeks.
