TLDR

Tianhe and Zhujiang New Town are the easiest bases for first-time visitors, with 5 star international hotels and walkable access to Canton Tower. Yuexiu is more atmospheric and cheaper. Liwan works for heritage walkers near Shamian Island. Baiyun District suits airport-focused stays at 350 to 700 CNY. Pazhou is the Canton Fair area. Rates run 150 CNY hostel to 3,500 CNY luxury, doubling in April and October fair weeks.

Insider Tip

If you are visiting outside Canton Fair weeks (April and October), target Zhujiang New Town for the modern CBD experience and a 10 minute walk to Canton Tower. Rates outside fair season run 700 to 1,200 CNY at 4 star flags, roughly half the fair-week price.

Tianhe and Zhujiang New Town: The Default Choice

Where to Stay in Guangzhou: Area Guide for Visitors

Tianhe District is the modern commercial heart of Guangzhou. It contains Tianhe Sports Centre, the Tianhe Road shopping axis with Taikoo Hui and Grandview malls, and a dense cluster of 3 to 5 star international hotel flags. Zhujiang New Town sits inside Tianhe as the CBD proper, between the Opera House, Canton Tower and the Pearl River. Most first-time visitors who want comfort and easy navigation stay here.

The luxury end in Zhujiang New Town covers Mandarin Oriental, Four Seasons at the Guangzhou IFC (the tallest hotel floors in the city), Ritz-Carlton, W Guangzhou, Grand Hyatt and Sofitel. Rates run 1,500 to 3,500 CNY for a standard room outside fair season, climbing to 3,000 to 6,500 CNY in April and October. The 4 star tier (Langham Place, Shangri-La, Pullman) sits at 900 to 1,800 CNY. 3 star chains (Atour, Hanting, Jinjiang Inn) run 400 to 700 CNY.

Why it works: Metro Lines 1, 3 and 5 plus the APM line all converge in or next to Zhujiang New Town. You walk to Canton Tower across the Haixinsha footbridge in 15 minutes. Taikoo Hui mall has the strongest English-signed restaurants and retail. Tianhe Road runs 24 hours with bars, late-night food and safe streets. Baiyun Airport is 45 to 55 minutes by metro. The things to do guide organises sightseeing days around a Tianhe base.

Yuexiu: Atmosphere at Mid-Range Prices

Yuexiu is older Guangzhou. Beijing Road pedestrian street, Yuexiu Park with the Five Rams Statue, the Five Immortals Temple, and the classic Cantonese restaurant houses are all here. The district feels more lived-in than Tianhe, with morning tea halls, tea shops, traditional medicine stores and older arcade buildings. Metro Line 1 and Line 2 cover it thoroughly, connecting to both Tianhe and Liwan.

Hotels here lean 3 to 4 star at 400 to 900 CNY. Garden Hotel Guangzhou (a 5 star local brand with extensive grounds) runs 900 to 1,600 CNY and is the closest upper-tier flag. China Hotel by Marriott sits 700 to 1,400 CNY. Chain hotels and boutique inns in the 200 to 500 CNY range cover Beijing Road and Dongfeng Middle Road. Canton Fair weeks see 50 to 100 percent price rises but Yuexiu pushes up less than Tianhe or Pazhou.

Why it works: You get the best street atmosphere in the city, walking access to Beijing Road and Yuexiu Park, and easier budget options. Trade-off: fewer international-flag hotels, less English support at check-in, and Canton Tower is a metro ride rather than a walk. If the modern tower skyline is not your priority, Yuexiu gives a more authentic Guangzhou experience at two-thirds the Tianhe price.

Liwan: Heritage Base Near Shamian Island

Where to Stay in Guangzhou: Area Guide for Visitors
Where to Stay in Guangzhou: Area Guide for Visitors

Liwan District covers the old western quarter with Shamian Island, Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, Shangxiajiu pedestrian street, Yongqingfang heritage alleys, Huangsha Seafood Market and Tao Tao Ju. Walking between these attractions is pleasant from October to April. Metro Lines 1, 5, 6 and 8 serve the district.

The White Swan Hotel at the western tip of Shamian Island is the only full-service international flag on the island itself, running 1,200 to 2,800 CNY with Pearl River views. Elsewhere in Liwan you find mid-range Chinese chains at 300 to 600 CNY, some boutique hotels in restored tong lau buildings near Yongqingfang at 600 to 1,100 CNY, and budget hostels near Changshou Road Metro at 100 to 250 CNY. The district leans quieter after 10pm than Tianhe.

Why it works: closest to Cantonese food heritage, walking access to Shamian and Chen Clan, and generally cheaper than Tianhe. Trade-off: 30 to 40 minutes by metro to Canton Tower, fewer modern bars and international restaurants, and less English signage. Worth it for visitors prioritising the Liwan walking loop and Cantonese food. The restaurants guide covers Liwan’s food heritage.

Baiyun, Pazhou and Specialist Bases

Baiyun District in the north is practical for airport proximity and longer business stays, sitting 15 to 25 minutes from Baiyun International Airport by Didi or metro. Hotels like Guangzhou Baiyun Hotel on Yuexiu Park’s edge of Baiyun run 350 to 700 CNY a night and sit on Metro Line 2 for easy city access. The district is quieter than Tianhe at night with fewer restaurants but strong value and good for travellers with early or late flights.

Pazhou on the south bank of the Pearl River in Haizhu District is the Canton Fair complex area. Langham Place Pazhou, Westin Guangzhou and Sofitel Sun Rich all sit within 10 minutes of the exhibition halls. Rates outside fair weeks are reasonable at 600 to 1,000 CNY. During fairs in April and October expect 1,500 to 3,500 CNY for a standard room, with rooms selling out months ahead. Non-fair visitors rarely base here because Canton Fair Station connects to the rest of Guangzhou more slowly than central Tianhe.

For airport hotels specifically, Pullman Guangzhou Baiyun Airport connects directly to Terminal 2 at 650 to 1,200 CNY, and Holiday Inn Express Baiyun Airport is a 10 minute shuttle at 400 to 600 CNY. Only worth it for pre-dawn departures or late-night arrivals. The transport guide covers airport transfers from every major hotel district.

Booking Windows and Seasonal Pricing

Canton Fair weeks in April (phase 1 mid-April to phase 3 first week of May) and October (mid-October to first week of November) push rates up 50 to 200 percent across all districts. Book at least 3 months ahead if you are visiting during these windows. Chinese New Year (late January to mid-February) runs the opposite way with many hotels offering 15 to 30 percent discounts as domestic travellers head home.

Shoulder season rates run May and June (apart from fair overlap weeks) and September. These are the cheapest windows outside Chinese New Year. Avoid July and August heat if you can, not for hotel rates (which are reasonable) but because sightseeing is punishing in 35 to 38 Celsius humid afternoons. October through December is the peak price-and-weather combination window.

Payment: 4 and 5 star hotels take Visa, Mastercard, Amex and JCB without friction. Mid-range 3 star and Chinese chain hotels occasionally run your card on an unfamiliar terminal. Bring a backup card. Register Alipay tourist mode before arrival for incidental spend. Most hotels require a deposit (around 500 to 1,500 CNY) charged to your card on check-in and released 3 to 7 days after check-out.
